Step by Step French Toast Casserole { Pictures & Video }

Hellloooo! Hope you are having a great evening! I thought I would share my French Toast Casserole Recipe with you all. Its super easy to make.. it feeds an army.. and its really tasty. It does have to sit over night so you have to prepare it the day before. [ The video is at the very Bottom ]

The ingredients are pretty simple!

  • 2 pounds breakfast sausage ( maple is best! )
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 stick butter, divided
  • 1 loaf Italian bread, cubed and toasted (about 5-6 cups)
  • 1 cup pecans, toasted and chopped
  • 2 apples, diced
  • 2 Tablespoons vanilla extract
  • 12 large eggs, beaten
  • 1/2 cup maple syrup
  • 3 cups milk

Fry up the sausage..

And drain..

Cube up and toast your bread.. but you could just cube it a couple nights before and let it go stale in a dish on the counter and it will work just fine!

Dice up the apples..

I squeezed a little lemon  over the apples to keep them from browning!

Then make the custard.

Use 3 cups 1/2 & 1/2 or you could use milk.
12 Eggs
1/2 cup syrup.. any kind is fine..
A couple tablespoons of cinnamon and you could also grate some nutmeg in it too.
2 tablespoons vanilla.

Then stack up the sausage, apples, and custard..sprinkle with the pecans ...

Cover and refrigerate over night..

Then the next morning, preheat the oven at 375 and back for about an hour until its puffy and brown!

Serve it warm..

Its not the prettiest casserole because of the sausage on the top.. So if you want it to look a little nicer.. put the sausage down first then the apples, pecans and the custard.

I normally sprinkle the top with powered sugar but I ran out over Christmas and just didn't worry about it! But that also helps it look better!

My family.. including my current husband and ex husband.. along with the kids and Brandon loved this.. they ate bowl after bowl. Drizzle some syrup over each plate and serve with some cold milk for a wonderful breakfast/brunch/or dinner!

Here's the video!

Do you have a yummy breakfast casserole recipe!? Send it in.. and I will share it!! And let me know what you think if you make this casserole!

Have a great night!
